Well, this took FOREVER. I spent hours and hours on this one single mini! I figured I should, given that this is my Wolf Lord, name of Skodi.
In terminator armour and dual claws he should stand out nicely with a big wolf pelt and red-lined cape. I've taken pictures up close, but the paint job looks really nice from a bit further away and naked eye instead of camera under lights!
Here's the front view that a tyranid might see a second before it is sliced and diced...
Here's the side view showing a little of the freehand work and the purity seals.
As I've used on many of my minis there is some celtic type freehand here too. It looks a bit messy and chunky here (or maybe that's just my over-reaction) but looks okay in normal circumstances!
And the other side shows the shoulder pad you are used to now and a little lightning freehand on the hip armour to match the claws. Oh, and there's a lava-pit underneath that you can't really see from the low angles I've used here. I'll try and take some higher angle shots another time.
I'll take a group shot at some point, but I'm really happy with how he turned out and hope that he looks good at the front of my army!
how do you do all this free hand stuff, i can never do it, even if i spend hours!!
ReplyDeleteNice paint job by the way, we can just see that lava at the bottom
I have a 20/0 brush for the fine detail freehand. The key for me is to work it out on a bit of paper first. After that it's little things like realising that sometimes painting the "background" over the design is easier than trying to be super neat with the freehand design.
DeleteI'm certainly no expert though, try some youtube searches, there must be tutorials out there somewhere?
The design is due to the space wolf background. Since their planet is one of fire and of ice all I seem to see is people focussing on the ice part. I wanted to do something different AND have it match my battle board, so wanted an icon to match. So that's why there's a wolf and some lava =) Originally I was going to have snowflakes or something as well, but it was just too complicated/busy on the small shoulderpad.
ReplyDeleteThe freehand stuff takes a long time as it's pretty fussy. Not really sure how long. It took maybe an hour to do the bit on the cloak. The shoulderpads I do in stages so I don't know how long it takes all up. It takes just as long to work out a design sometimes as it does to paint it.
Your best job ever I would say! A contest winner if one comes up.
ReplyDeleteThanks =) But if you think mine is good you should see what some people can do! (eg. http://renesminis.blogspot.com.au/2010/02/warhammer40k-space-wolf-lord-with.html)
DeleteI really like the claws, and the details of all the fur / hair came out nice and neatly. It must have been hard doing the claws - they're really small at real-life scale!
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking I should put a common object next to them for scale =)
