Thunder and Lightning

Here we have my latest (actually, it's a bonus two for the post of one today).

One Wolf Guard - Terminator Armour - Storm Shield - Thunder Hammer. I really do enjoy the Space Wolf troops. They might be a pain and take forever to do (about eight hours on this guy) because there are so many extra bits and pieces that I want to do well, but still, I really love them!

This is the guy climbing a rock that I quite liked the pose of when I built him. I was concerned about some of the green-stuff and angles, but in the end the paint hid all! As always, I'm not a huge fan of the photo as it makes things just not quite the right colours, too bright and it shows a lot of the line-work that blends so much better at a bit of a distance!

The storm shield is supposed to have some sort of energy field that reasons why it is so effective, so I painted it as though it used similar technology to the other power weapons in the army, with bluey-white lightning.

And there's nothing much to see from the back...

More lightning crackling on the hammer head and you can see the power field emanating from the back of the shield from the emitters there.

And, of course, there is lava down underneath =)

Here he is on the table with the rest of the army faintly visible behind him...

And a whole army shot to show the progress (or lack thereof) since last time.

Oh, and in between the more advanced troops I've been slogging through the Grey Hunter troops as well. Here's a guy with bolt pistol and axe (I actually painted him before the thunder hammer guy). Seven of Nine (haha) in his squad. Number eight is now on my painting table and I'll get onto him as soon as I finish blogging.

Squad 2 pack marking there.

Yikes the axe doesn't look quite so obviously blotchy like that in normal lighting! Honest!

Well there you go, another update to keep me motivated.

Speaking of motivation, my brother has done a bit of painting too... http://pauls40k.blogspot.com.au/

Wolf Guard Battle Leader

After testing out my frost weapon effect on the previous space wolf assault cannon and frost sword wolf guard terminator I wanted to tackle my second in command.

My army is split into two halves, one half under the wolf lord, the other under the battle leader. He was one of my favourite poses, so I wanted to do a good job on him. It took hours and hours, but I think I've got him finished to my satisfaction now!

Striding purposefully forward with axes spread... (Don't forget you can click on the pic to make it bigger!)

The graduations on the left frost axe aren't as visible when you're not zoomed right up close, but even so I think I did a pretty neat job even if I do say so myself! I know it's nothing compared to lots of the expert painters out there, but for me I'm really happy with how it turned out!

The rear shows the other frost axe and the wolfy pelt bits.

I really do need to get a better photo system. Don't get me wrong, the milk jug light box is way better than my previous method, but it still washes things a bit too brightly.

I took a shot sort of from above (though he fell forward a bit too far) to give some idea of what you'd more likely see while playing =)

So here are my two commanders!

And my whole army as it is now. I've arranged them so that I can more easily see what I've done and have yet to do. The two leaders are in front. Behind them come the terminator wolf guard (of which I've only painted the assault cannon and frost sword guy. There are four in the first (left hand side) part of the army, three in the second. Behind them are two lots of nine grey hunters, each pack led by a wolf guard in power armour. In between those two squads are the lone wolf (terminator), dreadnought and one or two "spares". Behind the dreadnought are two smaller packs of six grey hunters, each with a wolf guard pack leader. Behind them are two squads of four long fangs (heavy weapons) each with a squad leader. And off in the distance are a drop pod and a pack of scouts, with wolf guard leader.

So, plenty left to paint up! I'm sure I'll run out of puff/interest again at some stage, but at the moment I'm really enjoying the painting. It's easy to squeeze in a half hour a day (or more if I'm lucky).

Space Wolf Wolf Guard with Assault Cannon and Frost Sword

Well, over three days of child naps and then some I decided to go back on my original plan of painting complete squads and just paint whatever I felt like. What I felt like was one of my favourite minis I put together.

Here is my Space Wolf Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour with an Assault Cannon and Frost Sword.

He's using his sword to brace as he lays down heavy fire...

Here's a view of the cannon. I put some greenish wires in just for a bit of extra colour, although it's not as if there's not already enough going on!

From the back you can see the shells and belt feed to the gun. I quite like the bulk of it all.

The stripes on the frost weapon are my first attempt at a sort of blended swordy type thing rather than an electricity power weapon effect, hopefully to help me tell them apart.

And, of course, when a frost weapon meets lava, the frost sword wins, hopefully it looks a little like the lava is solidifying or at least crusting over near the sword.

Unfortunately these shots were taken under pretty harsh light, so they're a bit harsh and bright. My two, so far, terminator armoured marines.

And another angle...

The sword looks a little better blended from a distance. (I hope!)

So who knows what will be next, but I had a blast painting him, it's so over the top, the size of the gun, the massive armour, the lava... great fun!

Wolf Lord Skodi

Well, this took FOREVER. I spent hours and hours on this one single mini! I figured I should, given that this is my Wolf Lord, name of Skodi.

In terminator armour and dual claws he should stand out nicely with a big wolf pelt and red-lined cape. I've taken pictures up close, but the paint job looks really nice from a bit further away and naked eye instead of camera under lights!

Here's the front view that a tyranid might see a second before it is sliced and diced...

Here's the side view showing a little of the freehand work and the purity seals.

As I've used on many of my minis there is some celtic type freehand here too. It looks a bit messy and chunky here (or maybe that's just my over-reaction) but looks okay in normal circumstances!

And the other side shows the shoulder pad you are used to now and a little lightning freehand on the hip armour to match the claws. Oh, and there's a lava-pit underneath that you can't really see from the low angles I've used here. I'll try and take some higher angle shots another time.

I'll take a group shot at some point, but I'm really happy with how he turned out and hope that he looks good at the front of my army!
