Space Wolf Grey Hunter Pack 2

As promised, here are some shots of my Grey Hunter second pack on some scenery.

I tried to take relatively large shots, so you can click on them for more detail. Unfortunately the lighting isn't crash hot, so they're not super distinct, but you'll get the idea!

If you're keen to see individual ones, just browse the blog as they've each had individual pictures taken in the past.

Here's the whole crew on the Lava board. Nine Grey hunters with a Wolf Guard in Power Armour to lead them. He has a storm bolter and power fist. The special weapons include a melta-gun (on the right) a power-weapon (spear) on the guy next to him and one guy with a mark of the wulfen (wolf helm, second from the left in the back row).

Here they are posed up on a hill...

Here are some slightly closer pics. I've given them each a different close combat weapon so that no two are alike in the pack. I just didn't want them all to have chainswords.

The bases go nicely with my battle board so although they look a bit boring sometimes in individual shots, they fit well. Now that they're all together, hopefully it's more obvious that the pack leader has a knee pad in the same style as the pack markings on the shoulderpads.

And the other guys...

This angle shows the shoulderpads. I wish I could say that they were all identical, but they're clearly not!

The pack markings are also not all identical, but they're close enough to pass a basic inspection!

And here they are on white backgrounds just because I was enjoying taking photos.

It sort of looks like they're doing some sort of dance... everybody turn...

And back the other way...

Line dancing space wolves!

I'm really glad I stuck to some little idiosyncrasies while putting these together. I like that the heavy weapons guys (melta guns in packs 1 and 2) have the pointy nosed helmets, that the wulfen guys have the wolf helmets, that the pack markings all match etc...

Anyway, I know that some of you can paint a whole pack in the time it takes me to do a single figure, but I'm not in any rush!

Space Wolf Grey Hunter with Chainsword

Haven't had much spare time this last week, so have only finished one troop.
The good news is that it's the last Grey Hunter in Pack 2, so I'll do an updated shot of the whole pack next time I get a chance.

Nothing particularly fancy here, probably took me 3-4 hours, I know, I know, I'm not the speediest painter in the world!

I wanted a bit more colour in the unit, so decided to do some hazard stripes on the chainsword like I've seen other people do. Well, not quite as good as some of the others I've seen, but it captures the idea, and doesn't look half bad from a bit of a distance.

The brown rope holding the skull to the back of the pack was tricky, but I think I did a better job on this one than the last one I did.

This guy is meant to be sort of striding purposefully forward, either weapon ready to go to action, but eyes are looking in the same direction as the bolt pistol.

So there we go, my second full squad done! Now just two smaller squads, two long fang squads, some terminators and some scouts to go!

Looking forward to posing the whole squad together at some stage, quite a nice milestone for me.

Thunder and Lightning

Here we have my latest (actually, it's a bonus two for the post of one today).

One Wolf Guard - Terminator Armour - Storm Shield - Thunder Hammer. I really do enjoy the Space Wolf troops. They might be a pain and take forever to do (about eight hours on this guy) because there are so many extra bits and pieces that I want to do well, but still, I really love them!

This is the guy climbing a rock that I quite liked the pose of when I built him. I was concerned about some of the green-stuff and angles, but in the end the paint hid all! As always, I'm not a huge fan of the photo as it makes things just not quite the right colours, too bright and it shows a lot of the line-work that blends so much better at a bit of a distance!

The storm shield is supposed to have some sort of energy field that reasons why it is so effective, so I painted it as though it used similar technology to the other power weapons in the army, with bluey-white lightning.

And there's nothing much to see from the back...

More lightning crackling on the hammer head and you can see the power field emanating from the back of the shield from the emitters there.

And, of course, there is lava down underneath =)

Here he is on the table with the rest of the army faintly visible behind him...

And a whole army shot to show the progress (or lack thereof) since last time.

Oh, and in between the more advanced troops I've been slogging through the Grey Hunter troops as well. Here's a guy with bolt pistol and axe (I actually painted him before the thunder hammer guy). Seven of Nine (haha) in his squad. Number eight is now on my painting table and I'll get onto him as soon as I finish blogging.

Squad 2 pack marking there.

Yikes the axe doesn't look quite so obviously blotchy like that in normal lighting! Honest!

Well there you go, another update to keep me motivated.

Speaking of motivation, my brother has done a bit of painting too... http://pauls40k.blogspot.com.au/

Another Space Wolf Grey Hunter

To get through all my figures I thought I'd better do some of the more standard troops in between the more fun ones. Having said that, it's not like any of the Space Wolves are plain or boring, there are plenty of bits and bobs on them to paint. I haven't painted any other 40k minis so don't know, but looking in White Dwarf magazines I get the idea that most factions are much more straight forward! The lettering is REGIN which, I presume, is the Hunter's name.

Pack 2 markings on the shoulderpad.

I tried to do some texture/light and dark bands on the sword. Looks a bit rough up close, but isn't so bad for real.

And here's a pic of the whole army so far. As you can see, I'm slowly but surely getting through them. One pack of Grey Hunters is complete (with Wolf Guard leader), the other pack only has three more troops to go until it's done (I've already done their Wolf Guard leader too).

Of course, to depress myself I won't say how many I still have to do!

Awoooo

Here's my second Mark of the Wulfen guy...

As with the other I've chosen to have him dual wielding guns as in close combat he goes berserk and I couldn't really model that. I figure he runs forward shooting then launches into a raging melee.

From front on...

From the other side...

And from the back...

That's it for today, another troop done, four to go in the squad...

Feel it hot, hot, hot...

So, over the last couple of days I've polished off the Melta armed Grey Hunter...

He has a melta gun in one hand and a sword in the other. The sword had runes etched into it, so I thought I'd try and do some shiny rune type things in it.

And from this side you see the red and yellow canister on the side of the meltagun in keeping with the other such guns in my force.

Quite happy with how the sword turned out, it's not quite so shiny really.

I quite like the pose too, I tried to make it look as though he were balancing the weight of the two weapons.

And here's my army as it stands (well, all the painted parts except the drop pod, which is at my brother's house at the moment).

Hoist the Banner

Yay! Another guy done!

My banner bearer for pack 2 of grey hunters, nothing particularly fancy here. I'm really pleased with the eyes, though the resolution isn't good enough in this shot, I'll try taking a better one tomorrow maybe. I think sometimes these milk bottle camera shots are great for visibility in terms of light in our dark house, but not so good for getting the angles you'd usually see when playing.

In keeping with the rest of pack 2 he has a bolt pistol instead of a boltgun.

I'm pleased with the shading on the back of the banner too, also the gem thingy on the backpack.

The pack markings are really hard to do, they seem like simple two red triangles on a black background, but due to the curvature of the shoulderpad, it's quite hard to paint them in such a way that they look like triangles from different angles.

Anyway, now Pack 2 has a leader, power weapon, banner bearer and a normal trooper. Lots more guys, but those are the tricky ones out of the way (except maybe the wulfen guy, perhaps I'll do him next).

Power Spear

I know I'm on a roll! One of our inconsiderate neighbours (actually a block away) had a VERY noisy dog barking for an hour and a half last night. In an effort to not get aggro I popped downstairs and did some more painting instead of sleeping =)

This is the power weapon grey hunter from my second pack, I decided to do the spear as a power spear.

Same old shoulderpad...

Back shows a slightly different backpack for some interest...

The second pack has horizontal stripes rather than vertical ones.

And here's a close-up of the spear so you can see it in all the blobby goodness. Looks better at a distance huh! It's just my standard blue colours, midnight blue background, regal blue with a 10/0 brush, enchanted blue over the top of that, ice blue with a 20/0 brush very slightly on top of that (trying to keep inside the older lines) then some white at intersections and on the "bolts" on the spear where the lightning originates from. For those of you who haven't tried this effect before, why not give it a go, remember that it's from a distance that is most important, doesn't matter if it's a bit blobby up close!

Because he's just a trooper I haven't done as neat a job as on Loki (http://simbattleboard.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Loki).

Working on the banner bearer now, but the munchkin is now awake so it may be a few days before he's done =)

**edit, just noticed that I haven't done the writing on his purity seal on his leg! oops!

Rok Kjel Wolfguard

Here's the leader of my second Grey Hunter squad, name of Rok Kjel. He's a Wolfguard like Etako with a powerfist and a storm bolter. He's got the pack marking for the second squad on his knee.

My favorite part are the crosshairs on his bionic eye targeting thing, a yellow cross on the red orb. It was tiny and fiddly and you can barely see it, but I like it as a bit of fun =)

Here's the side with the standard wolf on lava insignia...

And the back, nothing particularly exciting.

You can see the Wolf Guard pack marking on his shoulder pad, though the wolf fur pelt thing covers most of it. I did the shell casings in a bronzy kind of colour just because I thought it looked cool.

And from the top ou can sort of make out his name on the scroll, though it's a bit tricky from this angle, it looked right in the camera window!

And you can sort of make out the lava on the base of Skodi from this angle, but not really =)

Sorry I didn't touch-up the photos this time so there's a range of funny shades and brightnesses going on here. Usually I edit the picture a little to de-blue it and sharpen it a bit when I use the milk-bottle lamp to make it look more like it does under normal conditions.
